When Alf Gruvö was stuck with 1500 drawings to convert, we wrote him a simple plug-in, and probably saved his sanity. Alf's bespoke plug-in contains a whole bunch of commands for changing the properties of all entities in the drawing, depending on another property, as follows:

FS2FS - Change Fill Style to Fill Style
C2LW - Change line width for all entities with a certain color
LS2LW - Change line width for all entities with a certain line style
L2LW - Change line width for all entities on a layer
C2LS - Change line style for all entities with a certain color
FS2L - Change layer for all entities with a certain fill style
MPOLY2L - Move all multipolys to one layer
ADDLAYER - Add a new (empty) layer
FIXLAYER - Rearange all layernumbers

As a bespoke plug-in, this would have cost $150 to develop, which is not much for your sanity! As an example, you can download it for free.

A complex plug-in

An example of a more complicated plug-in is one we developed for a map-making company. It is very sophisticated in design, but easy to use, allowing the user to create detailed roof-plans with just a few clicks. The program constrains the geometry, right-angles, etc for each house according to the style of house selected in the dialog box, and adds all the shading and hatching. The color scheme is individually variable, controlled by an easy to use color-picker. Each map contains hundreds of houses, so you can see how much time this plug-in must save.

The roof-plan plug-in contains more than 1,000 lines of code and is very intelligent. A similarly clever program, developed specially to suit whatever you draw, would cost you in the order of $2,000. With the potential time-savings, it's not hard to earn that back!
